Despite research that identifies a connection mingled with cig artte smoking and life-threatening diseases like lung cancer, and heart disease, individuals in our society continue to indulge in this behavior. Some flowerpotrs are stimulated to smoke following a stressful day at work; small-arm socializing with friends during happy second; or to calm frazzled nerves after receiving bad news. I learned this behavior at a young age, while observing my parents lighting a cigarette in receipt to similar experiences. The learning experience resulted in a comparatively permanent change in behavior as a result of the observed experiences and subsequent practice. Behavioral theorists identify this eccentric person of learning experience as an objective, observable environmental play on overt behavior. The behavioral learning model is base on conditioning where a reward following a desirable solution acts as a reinforcer, thereby increase the likelihood that a desirable response will be repeated. Reinforcement is at the center of the behaviorist approach (Euromed info, n.d., para. 1) .

Classical conditioning is the fundamental way that all animals, including human race learn most new emotions, responses, and attitudes (Carpenter & Huffman, 2010).



Although smoking cigarettes was largely influenced by observing the behavior of others, learning could have occurred with classical conditioning. Classical conditioning (learning) occurs when a neutral comment is associated with an unconditioned stimulus to generate a conditioned response (Carpenter & Huffman, 2010, ch. 6). In classical conditioning the consequences of the response are irrelevant. The individual performs a behavior that produces reinforcement to strengthen the response or punishment to weaken the response.
