Patient pain assessment and prudence are non done well in our small community essential Department resulting in diligents being left in unsafe pain and discomfort whilst awaiting review by the Head medical exam Officer (HMO) of the department. Through research I have be that the pitiful assessment and management of patient pain is not a new phenomenon and is so well known it has a term oliganalgesia. Oliganalgesia is a term derived in the 1980s and is utilize describe how poorly patients in pain were treated in the ED (Hogan 2005:284), which demonstrates just how long standing this issue is. I feel that the inadequate assessment and management of pain is reflected at the initial presentation of the patient to the ED, through the unsatisfactory reflectance in triage scales. I believe that there is a glossiness that exists in our department among nursing staff and the medical supervisors which permits oliganalagesia and that it is exacerbated by time restraints and staffing shortages. Lack of training, education and opportunity for guided musing practice within the unit pertaining to pain assessment and management has a significant impact on the incidence of oliganalgesia.



The beneathassessment and under treatment of pain as a basic military man right (Williams & Manias 2007:77), raises the issue of the role as nurses as patient advocate and their duty of care to patients in the ED. Through the conductivity of a books review I was able to pick up many articles which discuss and provide research outcomes validating the reasons for the inadequate assessment and management of pain both in the ED and in nursing as a whole. Through this literature review I have been able to nominate 3 articles which I believe provide a contribution to the outgrowth and improvement of pain assessment and management in our ED and I have examined these articles more closely.
