In 1981, it was ruled that Arkansas schools should not teach creationism as an alternative to evolution, on the basis that creationism is not based on science, but religion. Two philosophers, Larry Laudan and Michael Ruse, agree that the ruling was correct, but protest on how that conclusion was reached in the court. Laudan believes that the Judge, William Overton, used weak arguments as to what constitutes science, and Ruse believes that Laudan was far too harsh in his criticism, and in some cases was actually wrong.
